Unfortunately the general public is not always knowledgeable about depression and some people might tell you to ‘snap out of it’, ‘pull yourself together’, or tell you ‘it could be worse’ in an effort to cheer you up. This is probably just their way of dealing with feeling powerless to help their nearest and dearest. However this type of response can exacerbate your own feelings of powerlessness and worthlessness. Depression is more common than we might think and it has even been called the ‘common cold’ of mental health conditions. Therefore whilst you may feel alone, many others have also experienced what you are going through. The good news is that depression responds very well to treatment. Within weeks people can start to feel better.
